About Me
Artist Statement – Vincent Caruso
Photography, for me, is about noticing the quiet moments that often pass unnoticed, the way light falls across a flower, the stillness of water at sunset, or the calm presence of a horizon where sky and ocean meet. I’m drawn to scenes that invite reflection and a sense of peace.
Much of my work explores the emotional connections we experience through nature. A single subject, whether a flower, a sailboat, or a distant shoreline can carry a story about recognition, distance, or acceptance. These images are less about documenting a place and more about capturing a feeling that viewers can bring their own experiences to.
I photograph with an emphasis on simplicity, balance and natural light, allowing the subject to breathe within the frame. My goal is to create images that feel calm and timeless, photographs that invite the viewer to pause, reflect and perhaps see a quiet part of their own story in the landscape before them.
Background Story
My name is Vincent, though most people call me Vinny and on occasion even, “Vincenzo”. I was named after my father and the only person who ever called me Vincent was my mom. My parents had hearts of gold and were a constant source of love, friendship and encouragement throughout my life. I will always be grateful for the example they set and the support they gave me. I can only hope I’ve made them proud as they look down from heaven.
Life has a way of changing direction when you least expect it. At the age of 26, I was diagnosed with heart disease. As someone who had always been athletic and loved to run, I was told I would never run again. Something that meant a great deal to me was suddenly taken away. I’m sure many people can relate in their own way, we all have moments in life that change our path.
One of my dreams had always been to run the New York City Marathon. Twelve years after my diagnosis, I crossed the finish line in 2010 while raising money and awareness for seriously ill children for Paul Newman’s Hole in the Wall Gang Camp. I returned again in 2011 to run it once more.
Running long distances also taught me something unexpected, how to notice the quiet moments along the way. When you run for miles at a time, you become aware of the subtle things around you: changing light, shifting skies, reflections on water and the calm that settles in when the world slows down. In many ways, photography grew naturally from that experience. The same patience and appreciation for simple moments that carried me through those miles now guide how I see and capture the world through my camera.
After completing the 2014 Boston Marathon, I realized it was time to pursue another dream that had been quietly waiting in my heart, photography. I left a career of fifteen years and enrolled at the Hallmark Institute of Photography in Turners Falls, Massachusetts. After graduating, I committed myself fully to capturing the moments of light, calm and connection that nature offers so generously.
Today my photography is inspired by those quiet moments that invite reflection, a flower illuminated by soft light, a distant horizon, or the stillness of water at sunset.
Life is short and none of us know how our story ends. When I eventually cross life’s finish line, I hope to leave behind photographs that bring people a moment of peace, a smile and maybe even a good laugh or two.
Live your dreams; tomorrow isn’t promised to anyone of us.
Are you ready?
